Is it normal to bleed during early pregnancy?

Bleeding during early pregnancy is not unusual. In fact 20% of all pregnant women could have some form of bleeding during early pregnancy and 60% of them would continue normally. Unfortunately 20% would miscarry and 5% would have missed abortion as the pregnancy stops to grow. On the other hand there is 1% chance of an ectopic pregnancy outside the uterus and 10% would have anembryonic sac.

With all this information in mind it is important to see your doctor at least to exclude the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy. It is reassuring that miscarriage rate drops to less than 5% if good fetal heart activity is seen by the seventh week of pregnancy.

As well there are bad prognostic signs when the fetal length does not correspond with the duration of pregnancy in a woman with regular periods and sure of her dates. Other adverse signs include a very large or very small sac, abnormal yolk sac or slow fetal heart rate.
