Is it normal to have very bad period pains?

Pain is a subjective feeling and difficult to quantify. However pain which is bad enough to affect the quality of life is abnormal. This is especially so since painful periods make the most common presentation of endometriosis. This includes teenage girls. It is a known statistics now that painful periods not responsive to analgesics or the pill for a period of 3 months carries a 70% risk of being caused by endometriosis.

On the other hand adult-onset painful menstruation is also abnormal and carries a high risk of endometriosis.

With this information in mind it is always important to see a specialist to exclude endometriosis or adenomyosis which are fairly common problems.
